Extra-Support for FamiliesExtra - Support for Families is here to support parents and carers in the Tendring District to meet the challenges of being a parent. We offer local opportunities to meet other parents at fun days, one-off workshops or family and parenting programmes. Sure Start: Children's Centres in Colchester and Tendring www.surestart.gov.ukChildren's Centres are being developed throughout the country with a government target of 3500 centres by 2010. The Sure Start Children's Centres programme brings together early education, childcare, health and family support to give all children the best start in life. Children's Centres may be one building or more within an area, providing local support and services to famililes in the identified areas. Many Children's Centres have developed from original Sure Start Local Programmes which were set up within the 20% most deprived wards, based on government measures of deprivation. However with Phase 2 of Children's Centres this has expanded the areas served and eventually all families with young children will be able to access a local centre. ColchesterIn Colchester, there are two designated centres already and a further five under development, so that by March 2008 there will be seven centres offering a range of services, information, advice and support to families with children under five years old. At present there is a Children's Centre in the Greenstead area and one in the St Anne's and Castle area of the town. The futher five centres will be based in New Town, Shrub End, Mile End/Highwoods, Berechurch and Birch including the rural area. The Ormiston Children and Families Trust are leading on the development of all seven centres working in partnership with Essex County Council. Consultation with families on what services are needed in each area has been taking place and consideration of existing services and development of new is now being discussed with centre managers and partner agencies. For further details of existing activities and services, have a look at www.colchester.surestart.org or call 01206 861950 or 01206 865555. TendringFollowing on from the success of Sure Start in Clacton, Jaywick and Harwich, as part of the Government's Every Child Matters: Change for Children programme, Tendring Children's Centre Services have been launched across the district. Within Tendring, there are nine separate areas where Children's Centre services will be available. Of these nine areas, six are already designated Children's Centres. By March 2008, all nine will be designated. The Tendring services work with nursery schools, pre-schools, health and education teams and voluntary organisations such as parent and toddler groups. Wherever the logo is displayed, Tendring Children's Centres will be involved in developing family services there. The Ministry of Parenting (Community Interest Company)In partnership with complementary services, The Ministry of Parenting aims to raise self-esteem, confidence, emotional resilience and mental wellbeing amongst parents and children and to promote social integration. This will enhance and support current good practice, training, evaluation, promotion of healthy living and providing equity of access. The Ministry of Parenting is led by a team of directors with a proven track record of excellence in parent training, consultancy, community development and parental mental health. The individuals behind the business also have a large network of contacts and are able to access a range of consultants, facilitators and trainers to help deliver the Company's aims and objectives. The target is to provide an integrated approach to supporting families and individuals through the provision of information, support, guidance, group programmes, supported signposting and training across Essex and the Eastern Region counties. Parenting programmes are delivered to groups of parents who meet regularly over a set period of time. The group is facilitated by professionals trained in parenting skills. Parenting programmes teach parents to recognise the common behaviours children exhibit. Parents learn how to encourage good behaviours and how to manage undesirable traits. The groups help many parents discover that parenting can be fun as well as challenging. Many programmes have been tailored to suit specific needs but very generic parenting programmes for parents who just want to promote confidence in their parenting are also offered. A list of the diverse range of programmes can be found on The Ministry of Parenting website: www.theministryofparenting.com. Services are tailored specifically to the needs of the parent, child or practitioner. The Ministry of Parenting is committed to and believes in positive parenting interventions, particularly during children's early years and adolescence. These are key points at which such interventions may avoid or reduce the need for expensive and long-term interventions in later life.
