Walking is probably the safest exercise you can do. No prior training or conditioning is required and it is not as stressful to the body as other forms of exercise. Yet while walking is easier on your body than running, it can be just as beneficial in helping you lose weight.
If you run for 30 minutes at five miles per hour you would burn approximately 285 calories. Walking for 30 minutes at four miles per hour on a level surface will burn 165 calories, 225 calories on a gentle incline and 360 calories on a steep incline.
So there's no excuse to stay indoors. Suitable footwear and appropriate clothing (a waterproof jacket, or sun hat and sun cream, depending on the weather) are all that are needed.
Regular organised health walks take place in various places around Colchester and Tendring and are designed to suit different levels of ability, all with an experienced walk leader. All ages and abilities are welcome to join in - just come along to the meeting point for each walk and put your best foot forward. It's a chance to enjoy some of our countryside and coastline and get fitter and healthier too.
